Default E-Discovery Software Features

When considering what to look for in e-discovery software, it depends on your needs. For example, do you need foreign language translation? Will you be having one person review documents or 20 people? Will those people be in one location or spread across the country? Is the amount of data you are reviewing small or massive? Are you doing pre-litigation review or are you in the middle of discovery? These questions help identify the many different perspectives of electronic discovery software users, and why it is challenging to recommend just one or just a few e-discovery software options.

Default E-Discovery Software

It is also important to consider the stage of electronic discovery as it relates to your software needs. For example, are you looking for software to use for data collection, searching/culling, and/or document management and legal review?

Concerning document management and legal review software, one major component is the type of review it will support - concept, linear, or both. Concept review tools are relatively new and therefore are not available with every e-discovery software application today. However, concept review tools can substantially decrease e-discovery review costs by how they organize and present documents to legal teams for review. Ringtail® with Attenex® Document Mapper™ is the solution we offer and it supports both concept and linear review.

Another major consideration is on-premise or on-demand. With on-premise, you are responsible for managing all aspects of the software installation and technology (computers and servers, upgrades, support, etc). If your firm has a-lot of resources and wants to make that investment then that may be a good choice. Alternatively, on-demand software is comparable to outsourcing the IT and support component whereby the application is accessible over the internet. With on-demand, there's no hardware or software to buy and you only pay based on the volume of data and/or number of users. For many law firms and corporations on-demand litigation document management and review software makes a-lot of sense.

Finally, scalability is also important. Many applications today still cannot handle the volume of ESI involved in large matters. If you think this may become a factor then it is important to find a solution that can scale with your case.

Hope this helps.
